Lifetime Achievement Honoree McCreary Tries to Make the Spinach Taste Good
It isn't often that award acceptance speeches catch our ear, but we tip our hats to International Data Group's Lew McCreary and Scott Berinato, honored at last week's Neal Awards with the Crain Award (for lifetime achievement in business journalism) and the McAllister Editorial Fellowship, respectively. After getting hooked on Esquire as a mere lad, 171/2-year IDG veteran McCreary distilled his winning version of business journalism thusly: "If you want your readers to eat their spinach, the spinach better taste good." For his part, Berinato (already a three-time Neal winner in 2003-2004), summed up his day-to- day activities this way: "My job is to penetrate noise for my readers, and my editors allow me--encourage me--to do that." As the Neal Awards judges recognize, b2b can use more like them.
