Global wireless chip sales to surge

Global wireless chip sales will continue to surge over the next few years as consumer interest in wireless devices grows, US high-tech market research firm IDC said Monday. Releasing a forecast, IDC said WLAN semiconductor revenue is expected to increase from 1.2 billion US dollars in 2004 to 3 billion dollars by 2009, representing a 21 percent compound annual growth rate. The sales of WLAN chips will surge to 487 million units by 2009 due to a growing number of end-market opportunities, IDC predicted. The market research firm believed that chip suppliers will play a vital role in accelerating the adoption of WLAN features in high volume consumer device segments such as gaming consoles, set-top boxes, and digital TVs. Celeste Crystal, senior research analyst at IDC, said increased competition and advanced chip integration will continue to create intense pricing pressure in the WLAN market, however, opportunities still exist for vendors to differentiate themselves from the pack.
