New MIT lab complex is scene of heady research
It's fitting that the world's largest center to study the brain is at a university where there are perhaps the most big brains. The official opening of the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex at MIT last week promises quantum leaps in understanding how the brain works. And it's bringing together hundreds of MIT scientists scattered all over campus into one place where they can interact. Patrick McGovern, the 68-year-old head of the Framingham-based IDG Group — along with his entrepreneur wife Lore — donated $350 million to build and support the groundbreaking center. He says his interest in the subject dates back to when he read a book about a giant brain as a boy. McGovern went on to major in neuropsychology and biology at MIT before founding the world's largest publisher of computer and business magazines.
