Tech Sector Mergers to Continue; Firms with a Specialty are Takeover Bait

Led by hospitals and the government, global spending on information technology is expected to jump 6 percent to top more than $1 trillion this year, according to IDC, the Framingham-based high-technology research company. At the same time, businesses are demanding more sophisticated technology that handles a larger number of business functions. The result will be a spate of consolidation in high tech as larger companies buy up smaller firms that have developed software or hardware that customers need, said Frank Gens, senior vice president of research at IDC.
