LinuxWorld to draw open-source users / Thousands expected at Moscone in S.F.

About 11,000 users and supporters of open-source computing are expected to congregate in San Francisco starting today for this week's LinuxWorld Conference. Warwick Davies, group vice president of IDG World Expo, the conference sponsor, said the biannual gathering will underscore the expansion of Linux in corporate technology. "The scope of Linux has moved beyond the operating system," he said. Linux is the most popular software in the open-source movement, which offers technology for free and enhances it through a community of developers. The software has emerged as a serious challenger to Windows, Microsoft's proprietary technology as more businesses embrace Linux to run their information technology networks.
