National Journal's Technology Daily
A majority of chief security officers surveyed by CSO magazine believe that "phishing," where criminals send legitimate-looking but fake, e-mails with the intent of stealing people's personal information, will increase in 2005. Of the 459 CSOs polled, 96 percent believe the trend will continue, and 65 percent do not think law enforcement and businesses are doing enough to prevent it. "Security executives are attuned to the threat phishing poses," says Lew McCreary, editor in chief of CSO. "They also look for help from industry peers and law enforcement to spread awareness about any new threat." Despite the possible threats, 79 percent of CSOs reported that they would still shop online this holiday season. Of those who choose not to shop via the Internet, 34 percent said they do not want their information stolen, 22 percent are concerned about identity theft and 17 percent think online shopping systems are insecure.
